Brief Description: Arkansas Crisis Intervention Team STANDARDS Training (40-hour) in accordance with AR Code §12-9-119

Full Description: Crisis Intervention Training is a safe response by first responders to those experiencing a mental health crisis. Crisis Intervention Team STANDARDS Training employs community partnerships centering a community-oriented policing model with best practice adult learning models to deliver impactful and effective de-escalation approaches. The Crisis Intervention Team is an elite group of first responders who act as primary responders to behavioral health crisis calls. Crisis Intervention Teams are often comprised of law enforcement officers, emergency management and response, mental health professionals, and community advocates to create a holistically skilled team who can best address the needs of individuals who may be experiencing a crisis. Each of the perspectives represented in the training bring a unique knowledge-base and set of skills so participants can learn and adapt their responses accordingly.

CIT programs create connections between law enforcement, first responders, mental health providers, hospital emergency services, and individuals with mental illness and their families. Through collaborative community partnerships and intensive training, CIT improves communication, identifies mental health resources for those in crisis, and improves officer and community safety. This program provides education and deepens community partnerships around a common cause.

The CIT STANDARDS course educates community members in the areas of mental health, substance use, personality disorders, developmental disorders, post-traumatic stress, suicide prevention, critical incident stress, and additional content as it relates to crisis intervention.
This program allows participants to learn about issues within a controlled setting to accelerate and enhance team development, increase understanding, and reinforce the likelihood of participants' implementing new skills in real-world situations.

The core training (CIT STANDARDS 40-Hour Course) focuses on:
     Equipping participants with a deeper understanding of various mental health issues and how they impact the daily lives of community members.
     Building practical skills for handling crises through interactive activities, discussions, and
exposure to individuals with lived experiences.
     Providing crisis de-escalation skills as communication and behavioral health tools that can better help participants manage various interpersonal issues through their everyday lives and roles.

Resources Required: This is the 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team Training that meets the specific training requirements of AR Code §12-9-119 Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Training. ALL 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Trainings are to meet the training requirements stated within AR Code §12-9-119. CLEST CIT trainings will be conducted at and/or visiting the following during trainings: law enforcement agencies, university/college campuses, Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU's), local community behavioral health institutions, ALETA (to include East Camden, Northwest & the Central academy locations), etc. Representatives from these listed institutions as well as individuals with lived experience perspectives including their family members, will be presenting class instruction and/or visiting during training per statute.

Attendance each day is required in addition to successfully completing the course which includes both classroom and practical applications by participants.

Reporting Instructions: The training will be held at the Southside High School Auditorium located at 70 Scott Drive in Batesville Arkansas Monday, October 28, 2024.

Please keep in mind this is a school campus so traffic may be congested; allow yourself plenty of time to arrive and be ready to start training at 0800.

Due to the scheduling and training curriculum, class will begin every morning at 0800 and is scheduled to conclude no later than 1700 daily; there is a 1-hour scheduled lunch each day of this training.

Meals, lodging, and any other travel expenses are not provided by ADLEST (CLEST).

Signup Details: The Arkansas’ based CIT STANDARDS model is a cross-collaborative intervention practice that supports and de-escalates mental health-related crises. This training blends the medical and socioecological models of mental health, applied communication practices, adult learning theory, and crisis intervention and management models to create a comprehensive approach for responders to enlist when working with persons with mental illness. The initial training program is a 40-hour specialized psychoeducation course that incorporates experiential learning and narrative storytelling while focusing on communication and crisis management models to equip participants with non-physical de-escalation skills and strategies.
